RESEARCH ON THE CORROSION OF NON-ALLOY STEEL IN LIME SOLUTIONS AND IN WET CONCRETE

A STUDY IS MADE OF THE ELECTROCHEMICAL REACTIONS OF ARMCO IRON AND THE NON-ALLOY STEEL USED FOR PRESTRESSING WIRES WHEN IMMERSED IN LIME SOLUTIONS REPRESENTING THE "CONCRETE MEDIUM". THE AGGRESSIVENESS ON THE IRON AND STEEL, OF THE VARIOUS HALIDES ADDED TO THE LIME CAN BE CONTROLLED BY THE POTENTIOKINETIC METHOD: THE EXISTENCE OF A RUPTURE POTENTIAL CORRESPONDING TO THE LOCAL DESTRUCTION OF THE PASSIVATION LAYER CONSTITUTES A CRITERION OF CORROSION BY FITTING. ACCORDING TO THIS CRITERION, THE LEVEL OF CHLORIDE CONCENTRATION HARMFUL TO STEEL IS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 0.001 MOL/L. VARIOUS INHIBITORS OF STEEL CORROSION CAUSED BY CHLORIDES WERE ANALYSED BY THIS METHOD, THEY APPEAR TO BE EFFECTIVE ONLY WHEN HIGHLY CONCENTRATED. TESTS CARRIED OUT TO REPRODUCE STRESS CORROSION WITH CRACK FORMATION DID NOT GIVE THE EXPECTED RESULTS: SAMPLES OF PRESTRESSING STEEL UNDER TENSILE STRESS AND COATED WITH MORTAR CONTAINING 12 PER CENT CALCIUM CHLORIDE IN RELATION TO THE WEIGHT OF THE CEMENT, WERE SIMULTANEOUSLY SUBJECTED TO ANODIC POLARIZATION IN A LIME-SATURATED SOLUTION; THE TYPE OF ATTACK CAUSED BY THESE CONDITIONS IS CORROSION BY FITTING, AND THE STRESSED STEEL SAMPLES FAILED AS A RESULT OF LOCALIZED DECREASES IN THE SIZE OF SOME SECTIONS. /LCPC/RRL/
