EVALUATION OF FIELD-MOULDED SEALANTS FOR CONCRETE PAVEMENTS AND STRUCTURES

THIS REPORT DEALS WITH A DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS PROJECT THAT WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1962 TO EVALUATE VARIOUS TYPES OF FIELD MOULDED SEALANTS. THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT WAS TO DETERMINE IF ANY OF THE TYPES TESTED OFFERED SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE IN PERFORMANCE TO WARRANT, TAKING COST, EASE OF APPLICATION AND OTHER FACTORS INTO ACCOUNT, THEIR ADOPTION FOR USE. IT WAS ALSO THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY TO PREPARE A SPECIFICATION FOR THESE MATERIALS. THE PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN IN TWO PHASES' A LABORATORY STUDY OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF SEALING COMPOUNDS AND A FIELD EVALUATION OF THEIR PERFORMANCE. THE LABORATORY PHASE OF THE PROJECT INVOLVED THE FULL-SCALE TESTING OF TWENTY PRODUCTS, INCLUDING TWO- COMPONENT COLD APPLIED POLYSULPHIDES AND POLYURETHANES, AS WELL AS HOT-POURED RUBBERIZED ASPHALTS. IN THE FIELD PHASE, ELEVEN MATERIALS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE DIFFERENT AVAILABLE TYPES AND SHOWN BY THE LABORATORY TESTS TO REQUIRE FIELD EVALUATION, WERE USED TO SEAL THE CONTRACTION JOINTS OF A NEW CONCRETE PAVEMENT. EACH MATERIAL WAS INSTALLED IN JOINTS OF FOUR DIFFERENT DESIGNS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF THE JOINT SHAPE FACTOR. IT WAS CONCLUDED FROM THE STUDY THAT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FIELD-MOULDED JOINT SEALANTS ARE UNSATISFACTORY. UNLESS MORE SUITABLE PROJECTS ARE DEVELOPED, THE USE OF PREFORMED NEOPRENE COMPRESSION TYPE SEALANTS, PROVIDES THE BEST AVAILABLE MEANS OF SEALING JOINTS IN CONCRETE PAVEMENTS AND STRUCTURES. /AUTHOR/
