STRENGTH FORMULAS FOR DESIGN OF STEEL PLATE GIRDERS

DESIGN FORMULAS ARE PRESENTED FOR EVALUATING THE ULTIMATE STRENGTH OF PLATE GIRDER PANELS UNDER BENDING, SHEAR, OR A COMBINATION OF SHEAR AND BENDING. THE ULTIMATE STRENGTH OF A PANEL IS OBTAINED AS A SUM OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS BY THE WEB BUCKLING STRENGTH (BEAM ACTION), THE WEB POST-BUCKLING STRENGTH (TENSION FIELD ACTION), AND THE FLANGE STRENGTH (FRAME ACTION). THE PLATE GIRDER MAY BE HOMOGENEOUS OR HYBRID WITH A SYMMETRICAL OR UNSYMMETRICAL CROSS SECTION. A TENTATIVE RECOMMENDATION IS MADE FOR PRECLUDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF FATIGUE CRACKS DUE TO THE BACK-AND-FORTH DEFLECTION OF THE WEB PLATE. /AUTHOR/
