DURABILITY TESTING OF STABILIZED MATERIAL

THIS REPORT CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING PARTS: (1) A RESEARCH PAPER ENTITLED "A HEAT-TRANSFER MODEL FOR EVALUATING FROST ACTION AND TEMPERATURE RELATED EFFECTS ON MULTILAYERED PAVEMENT SYSTEMS," (2) A RESEARCH PAPER ENTITLED "QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERIZATION OF CYCLIC FREEZING AND THAWING IN STABILIZED PAVEMENT MATERIALS," (3) A PROGRESS REPORT DESCRIBING AUTOMATIC FREEZE-THAW EQUIPMENT DEVELOPED IN A RESEARCH STUDY IDENTIFIED AS IHR-401, DURABILITY TESTING OF STABILIZED MATERIALS. OVERALL, THE REPORT CONCERNS THE DEVELOPMENT OF INFORMATION ON THE TEMPERATURES AND THE NUMBER OF FREEZE-THAW CYCLES EXPERIENCED BY TYPICAL PAVEMENTS IN ILLINOIS. A MATHEMATICAL MODEL WAS DEVELOPED FOR CORRELATING AIR TEMPERATURES WITH FROST PENETRATION AND FREEZE-THAW CYCLES, USING CLIMATOLOGICAL RECORDS FROM 1900 TO THE PRESENT. CURRENT PRACTICES IN EVALUATING FREEZE-THAW TESTS WERE EVALUATED AND THE LITERATURE PERTAINING TO THE APPLICABILITY OF THESE TESTS TO PARTIALLY- CEMENTED MATERIALS WAS REVIEWED. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF AUTOMATIC FREEZE-THAW EQUIPMENT DEVELOPED IN THE STUDY. EXTENSIVE CONCLUSIONS ON THE APPLICATION OF FREEZE-THAW TESTING AND INTERPRETATION WITH RESPECT TO STABILIZED SOILS ARE DEFERRED UNTIL THE COMPLETION OF LATER PHASES OF THE STUDY. /BPR/
