A STUDY OF NORMAL LEAD SILICO CHROMATE PIGMENT IN YELLOW TRAFFIC ZONE PAINTS

THE PERFORMANCE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF BOTH MODIFIED ALKYD AND MODIFIED ALKYD-CHLORINATED RUBBER TYPE YELLOW TRAFFIC MARKING PAINTS WHICH UTILIZE NORMAL LEAD SILICO CHROMATE IN LIEU OF THE MORE COMMONLY USED MEDIUM YELLOW IN THE PIGMENT FORMULATIONS. FIELD AND LABORATORY TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON PAINT SAMPLES IN 1964, 65, AND 67. A STRAIGHT SUBSTITUTION OF NORMAL LEAD SILICO CHROMATE FOR CHROME YELLOW IN NEW YORK STATES STANDARD YELLOW PAINT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BECAUSE OF THE RESULTING LEMON COLORATION. HOWEVER, TWO FORMULATIONS WERE DEVELOPED, BASED UPON A NORMAL LEAD SILICO CHROMATE PIGMENT, IN WHICH THE COLOR WAS ACCEPTABLE AND THE PERFORMANCE SIMILAR TO THAT BEING RECEIVED FROM THE CURRENT STANDARD YELLOW PAINT. IN YELLOW, NORMAL LEAD SILICO CHROMATE PAINT MAY RESULT IN A REDUCED PAINT COST. ALTHOUGH THE MODIFIED ALKYD-CHLORINATED RUBBER TYPE PAINTS PROVIDED APPROXIMATELY THE SAME PERFORMANCE AS THE STATES STANDARD MODIFIED ALKYD PAINT, THEY ARE NOT CONSIDERED AS A SATISFACTORY SUBSTITUTE DUE TO THEIR COST OF APPROXIMATELY $2.00/GAL. THE STATES STANDARD PAINT IS PRICED AROUND $1.50/GAL. /AUTHOR/
