A HIGH CAPACITY ROLLING LOAD TESTING MACHINE

THE PAPER DESCRIBES A ROLLING LOAD TESTING MACHINE WHICH WAS DEVELOPED TO EVALUATE BASE COURSE MATERIALS IN THE LABORATORY, AND BRIEFLY REFERS TO THE PORTIONS OF A TEST PROGRAM THAT HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. THE MACHINE APPLIES LOADS, RANGING FROM 2,750 POUNDS TO 20,000 POUNDS, THROUGH A SINGLE WATER-FILLED 11.00 X 20 TRUCK TIRE TO THE SURFACE OF A TEST SPECIMEN CONSTRUCTED IN A STEEL CONTAINER WHICH IS 5-1/2 - FT. LONG, 4-1/2-FT. WIDE AND 3-FT. DEEP. THE LOAD IS NORMALLY APPLIED TO THE CENTRAL 42-IN. LONG BY 24-IN. WIDE SURFACE AREA OF THE SPECIMEN AT AN INFLATION PRESSURE OF 100 PSI BY A RECIPROCATING MOTION OF THE WHEEL IN THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION AND A SIMILAR MOTION OF THE SPECIMEN IN THE TRANSVERSE DIRECTION. THE FREQUENCY OF LOAD APPLICATION IS 20 CYCLES OR 40 APPLICATIONS PER MINUTE. THE SPECIMEN COMPLETES A TRANSVERSE CYCLE IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES. WHEEL LOAD IS RECORDED EITHER CONTINUOUSLY OR INTERMITTENTLY . THE PERMANENT VERTICAL MOVEMENT AT THE SURFACE IS DETERMINED BY MEASUREMENTS FROM A FIXED DATUM. DYNAMIC AND PERMANENT VERTICAL MOVEMENT AT THE SURFACE OF THE BASE COURSE AND AT THE SUBGRADE NEAR THE CENTER OF THE SPECIMEN ARE MEASURED BY DEFLECTOMETERS PLACED DURING CONSTRUCTION. LINEAR VARIABLE DIFFERENTIAL TRANSFORMERS ARE USED AS TRANSDUCERS.
