DENSITY VERIFICATION AND THE HUMIDITY CONDITIONS OF THE WEARING COURSE

HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION IS SUBJECT TO METEROLOGICAL CONDITIONS. CERTAIN LABORATORIES FAIL TO CHECK FIELD APPARENT SPECIFIC MASS ON WET DAYS, DURING WHICH THE WEARING COURSE IS VERY HUMID ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT WET WEARING COURSES HAVE INADEQUATE DENSITY. THIS ATTITUDE HAS CAUSED SERIOUS PRODUCTION PROBLEMS IN EARTHWORK AND PAVING CONSTRUCTION. ESPECIALLY DURING THE RAINY SEASON, THERE ARE PERIODS WHEN THE RAIN FALLS ALMOST AT THE SAME TIME EVERY DAY, PREVENTING THE ROADWAY FROM DRYING. IF, AFTER THE COMPACTION OF A SECTION OF THE SUBBASE, THE WEARING COURSE IS VERY HUMID, DUE TO THE RAINS, AND THE DENSITY IS NOT VERIFIED, THE CONTINUITY OF THE WORK IS BROKEN, FOR THE PAVEMENT BASE SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUCTED IF THE PREVIOUS STAGE IS NOT FINISHED. /RRI/
