RAPID METHODS FOR COMPACTION CONTROL OF ASPHALT PAVEMENT

IN THIS PROJECT THREE DIFFERENT METHODS FOR RAPID DETERMINATION OF VOID CONTENT IN ASPHALT PAVEMENT WERE TESTED. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE WAS THE STUDY OF ACCURACY AND TESTING TIME. THE METHODS ARE COMPARED TO THE TRADITIONAL TIME-CONSUMING METHOD. THE METHODS WHICH HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED ARE PARTLY LABORATORY METHODS AND PARTLY FIELD METHODS. THE FOLLOWING METHODS HAVE BEEN STUDIED: (1) THE VACUUM-METHOD; (2) SIMPLE DENSITY DETERMINATION; (3) THE NUCLEAR METHOD. THE VACUUM-METHOD IS DESCRIBED IN THE GERMAN DIN-SPECIFICATIONS. ABOUT 300 SAMPLES WERE TESTED IN THE LABORATORY. MOST OF THE SPECIMENS WERE DRILLCORES FROM THE ROAD, BUT SOME MARSHALL-SPECIMENS WERE ALSO INCLUDED. THE RESULTS SHOW A RELATIVELY GREAT SCATTERING. IT IS FOUND THAT EVERY SAMPLE HAS A CERTAIN PORTION OF CLOSED VOIDS, I.E. IMPERVIOUS TO WATER, BUT THE AMOUNT OF CLOSED VOIDS VARIES CONSIDERABLY. NEVERTHELESS THE RESULTS CORRELATE FAIRLY WELL WHEN COMPARED TO THE TRADITIONAL METHOD. THE METHOD TESTED IS THEREFORE CONSIDERED TO GIVE AN INDICATION OF THE VOID CONTENT IN AN ASPHALT PAVEMENT SUFFICIENTLY ACCURATE FOR NORMAL OPERATION CONTROL. ALTHOUGH THE EVACUATION TIME CAN BE REDUCED, THIS METHOD IS NOT CONSIDERED TO BE PARTICULARLY RAPID. THE ADVANTAGE LIES IN THE FACT THAT A LARGER NUMBER OF SPECIMENS MAY BE TESTED AT THE SAME TIME WITHOUT INCREASING THE TESTING TIME. THE METHOD BASED ON SIMPLE DENSITY DETERMINATION IS DEALT WITH THEORETICALLY. THIS METHOD IS MORE RAPID AND MORE ACCURATE THAN THE VACUUM-METHOD. BUT BOTH METHODS REQUIRE SAMPLES TO BE TAKEN FROM THE ROAD, AND THAT IS TIME CONSUMING. THE USE OF THE NUCLEAR METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF THE DENSITY OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IS NEW IN NORWAY. THEREFORE THE TESTS OF THIS METHOD HAD TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES, FIRSTLY TO GET FAMILIAR WITH THE MEASURING PROCEDURE AND SECONDLY TO COMPARE VARIOUS INSTRUMENTS. IT WAS DECIDED TO TEST THREE DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS, HERE CALLED TYPE A, B AND C RESPECTIVELY. ALL THE THREE INSTRUMENTS HAVE BEEN IN GENERAL USE IN OTHER COUNTRIES. MEASUREMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN 25 SPOTS ON VARIABLE ASPHALT SURFACINGS. FROM EACH SPOT DRILLCORES WERE TAKEN OUT TO BE EXAMINED IN THE LABORATORY. ALL THREE INSTRUMENTS SHOW MEASUREMENT RESULTS THAT CORRELATE WELL WITH THE DENSITIES FOUND IN THE LABORATORY. THE MOST IMPORTANT SOURCES OF ERROR ARE THE SURFACE ROUGHNESS, THE QUALITY OF THE BASE AND THE MIX COMPOSITION. PROVIDED THESE FACTORS ARE UNDER CONTROL THE ACCURACY CAN BE HELD AT PLUS OR MINUS 1,0-1,2% VOIDS. THIS IS SUFFICIENT FOR WORKING CONTROL.
