COMPACTION OF ASPHALT PAVEMENT

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DEGREE OF COMPACTION OBTAINED IN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS AND THE STABILITY OF THE UNDERLYING GRANULAR BASE COURSE WAS INVESTIGATED. THE DEGREE OF COMPACTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE LAID ON BASE COURSES WITH DIFFERENT COMPACTNESS HAS BEEN STUDIED BY FIELD TESTS ON ORDINARY ROADS AND BY TEST SECTIONS CONSTRUCTED SPECIALLY FOR THIS INVESTIGATION. THE VARIATIONS IN COMPACTNESS OF THE BASE COURSE MATERIAL WITH LOW AND HIGH STABILITY, I.E. A CBR-VALUE OF ABOUT 40 AND 90 RESPECTIVELY, PARTLY BY POOR AND GOOD COMPACTION OF THE BASE COURSE. THE COMPACTNESS OF THE BASE COURSE WAS DETERMINED BY PLATE BEARING TESTS USING PLATE DIAMETERS OF 160 AND 300 MM. OTHER ASPECTS OF THE TESTING PROCEDURE ARE INCLUDED. THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS INDICATE SLIGHTLY BUT SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER DEGREE OF COMPACTION IN WEARING COURSES LAID ON HIGHLY STABLE BASE COURSES COMPARED TO PAVEMENTS ON SOFTER BASES, ALTHOUGH THE VARIABILITY IS VERY LARGE IN BOTH CASES. A GENERAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEGREE OF COMPACTION IN THE SURFACING AND COMPACTNESS OF THE BASE COURSE HAS NOT BEEN FOUND. HOWEVER, THE GENERAL QUALITY OF THE SURFACING IS BETTER ON STABLE, WELL COMPACTED BASES. /AUTHOR/
