REFLECTOR ANALYSIS
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF PAINTS AND REFLEX REFLECTORS AS PASSIVE AIDS TO VEHICLE VISIBILITY AND HENCE TO TRAFFIC SAFETY ARE REVIEWED. METHODS FOR ANALYTICALLY ASSESSING REFLECTORS ARE DESCRIBED AND COMPARED WITH FIELD OBSERVATIONS. ACTUAL DETECTION DISTANCES WERE FOUND TO BE FARTHER THAN PREDICTED DETECTION DISTANCES. THE PRIMARY REASON FOR THIS DISCREPANCY IS BELIEVED TO BE THAT A RELATI- VELY HIGH THRESHOLD FOR ILLUMINATION AT THE EYE OF THE OBSE- RVER WAS ASSUMED FOR THE ANALYTIC PREDICTIONS WHILE THE FIE- LD SITUATION PROBABLY RESULTED IN A RELATIVELY LOW THRESHOLD AT THE EYE OF THE OBSERVERS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT NO DATA EXIST TO SUPPORT STANDARDS IN VEHICLE COLORS. REQUIREMENTS FOR REFLECTOR STANDARDS ARE DISCUSSED. /AUTHOR/
