ANALYTIC ASSESSMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLE REAR SIGNAL SYSTEMS

A COMPARATIVE STUDY TO INTEGRATE ALTERNATIVE REAR LIGHTING SYSTEMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES AND TO PLAN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MOST EFFICIENT CONFIGURATION BY THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN SUCH A MANNER AS TO ENSURE BOTH MAXIMUM SAFETY BENEFITS AND ACCEPTANCE BY THE PUBLIC WAS UNDERTAKEN. THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY WERE TO EVALUATE THE COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS AND PRACTICALITY OF NEW REAR SIGNAL SYSTEMS PROPOSED BY NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY BUREAU CONTRACTORS AND TO INTEGRATE THE BEST FEATURES OF EACH INTO THE MOST EFFICIENT CONFIGURATION FOR FURTHER STUDY. THIS REPORT SUMMARIZES THE RESULTS OF ALL OF THE STUDIES IN THIS GROUP OF CONTRACTS, PROVIDES A PROPOSED STANDARD REAR SIGNAL SYSTEM FOR IMMEDIATE IMPLEMENTATION RESULTING FROM THE INTEGRATION OF ALL EFFORTS, AND OUTLINES THE RESEARCH NEEDED TO SUPPORT ANY FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS IN REAR SIGNAL SYSTEM DESIGN. /AUTHOR/
