POLARIZED HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS: THE EFFECT OF LAMINATED AND TOUGHENED WINDSCREENS ON VISIBILITY DISTANCE

EXPERIMENTS ON TWO OPPOSING CARS, BOTH EQUIPPED WITH POLARIZED HEADLIGHTS, ARE DESCRIBED. VARIATIONS IN THEIR VISIBILITY DISTANCE WERE MEASURED, USING EITHER LAMINATED OR TOUGHENED WINDSHIELDS. A LIST OF THE LAMINATED AND TOUGHENED WINDSHIELDS USED IN THE TESTS IS APPENDED. THE MAIN CONCLUSIONS ARE THAT LAMINATED WINDSHIELDS, IN GENERAL, APPEAR SUITABLE FOR USE WITH A POLARIZED HEADLIGHT SYSTEM, WHILE TOUGHENED SHIELDS ARE NOT, IN GENERAL, SUITABLE FOR SUCH USE. /RRL/
