EFFECTIVE TOLL PLAZA LIGHTING

EFFECTIVE LIGHTING PRINCIPALS FOR TOLL PLAZAS ARE REVIEWED. A RECENTLY COMPLETED RELIGHTING PROJECT OF THE RARITAN TOLL PLAZA, LOCATED A FEW MILES SOUTH OF THE JUNCTION OF THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY AND THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE, ILLUSTRATES THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE PRINCIPALS INVOLVED. IN THE RELIGHTING OF THE AREA, THE WOOD POLES AND THE LUMINAIRES WERE REPLACED BY FOURTEEN EIGHTY-FOOT STEEL POLES, FOUR EQUIPPED WITH THREE AND TEN EQUIPPED WITH TEN, 1,00-WATT CLEAR MERCURY VAPOR FLOODLIGHTS. THUS, A TOTAL OF 32 FLOODLIGHTS ILLUMINATE AN AREA OF APPROXIMATELY 300,000 SQUARE FEET. THE TAPERED, STEEL POLES HAVE A TWELVE-SIDED ELLIPTICAL CROSS-SECTION. THEY ARE UNIQUELY DESIGNED TO BE SERVICED BY MEANS OF AN ELECTRICALLY-DRIVEN CAR WHICH CLIMBS THE POLE ON A CABLE THAT IS NORMALLY CONCEALED. THE CONCRETE FOUNDATION ON WHICH EACH POLE IS MOUNTED IS EQUIPPED WITH A FOUR-CIRCUIT PANELBOARD (INCLUDING ONE OR TWO SPARES) IN A CAST IRON BOX. EACH CIRCUIT BREAKER CONTROLS AND PROTECTS ONE FLOODLIGHT. THE FLOODLIGHTS ARE OF A UNIQUE DESIGN WHICH GIVES A SHARPLY CUT-OFF, ROUGHLY RECTANGULAR BEAM OF HIGH EFFICIENCY WITH A MINIMUM OF SPILL LIGHT. APPROACH ROADWAY LIGHTING FROM THE SOUTH IS PROVIDED BY CLEAR MERCURY VAPOR LUMINAIRES MOUNTED AT A HEIGHT OF 35 FEET ON ALUMINUM LAMPPOSTS. IN ORDER TO PROVIDE SMOOTH TRANSITION FROM THE UNLIGHTED PARKWAY TO THE BRILLIANTLY LIGHTED TOLL PLAZA, THE INTENSITY IS GRADUALLY INCREASED BY THE USE, IN SEQUENCE, OF 175-WATT, 250-WATT AND FINALLY 400-WATT LAMPS. ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED.
