TWO WHEEL TRAUMA - REVIEW OF MOTORCYCLE INJURIES OCCURRING IN METRO WINNIPEG DURING THE SUMMER OF 1965 (PRELIMINARY REPORT)

THE STUDY INCLUDES ALL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS OCCURRING IN METRO WINNIPEG BETWEEN 1 APRIL 1965 AND 1 OCTOBER 1965. FIGURES WERE BASED ON HOSPITAL AND POLICE RECORDS. ONE- HUNDRED AND FORTY CASES REQUIRED TREATMENT AT OR IN HOSPITAL . THE 17 YEAR OLD AGE GROUP ACCOUNTED FOR 24.3% OF 140 ACCIDENTS. JULY SHOWED THE HIGHEST INCIDENCE AND REPRESENTED 25% OF THE TOTAL 140. SIXTY-ONE ACCIDENTS WERE SIMPLY FALLS FROM THE MACHINE, 44 WERE COLLISIONS WITH OTHER VEHICLES. POLICE WERE INVOLVED IN 106 ACCIDENTS AND REFERRED 77 PERSONS TO HOSPITAL, YET 140 REPORTED TO HOSPITAL INDICATING THAT MANY GO DIRECTLY TO HOSPITAL WITHOUT NOTIFYING POLICE. FOR 26 PATIENTS ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY WAS 20 DAYS /9 LESS THAN ONE WEEK AND ONE CASE 17 PLUS WEEKS/. THERE WERE 3 FATALITIES IN 140 CASES. ONE CASE WAS ADMITTED APPARENTLY HAVING DIED A FEW MOMENTS BEFORE ENTRY. RESUSCITATION IN EMERGENCY FAILED. POST MORTEM EXAMINATIONS SHOWED THAT ALL 3 FATALITIES HAD SEVERE BRAIN INJURY. 1,676 LICENSES WERE ISSUED FOR HONDAS, 3, 196 ISSUED FOR ALL SCOOTERS AND LIGHT WEIGHT MOTORCYCLES INCLUDING HONDAS, 941 LICENSES WERE ISSUED FOR HEAVY MOTORCYCLES. THE TOTAL OF 4,137 DRIVERS REPRESENTS 0.8% OF THE POPULATION OF WINNIPEG. THE INCIDENCE OF ACCIDENTS AMONG THE LICENSED DRIVERS WAS 3.4%. /CGRA/
