FOR A NEW BRIDGE....A RIBBON OF LIGHT

THE BRIDGE PARAPET LIGHTING INSTALLATION ON THE 690-FT LONG PORT MANN BRIDGE WHICH CROSSES THE FRASER RIVER A FEW MILES EAST OF VANCOUVER, B.C., IS DESCRIBED. THE BRIDGE, PART OF A HIGH-SPEED MOTORWAY, HAS A WIDTH BETWEEN PARAPETS OF 64 FT. WITH TWO 5 FT SIDEWALKS, 4 TRAFFIC LANES AND A TWO-FOOT MEDIAN BARRIER. THE APPROACH ROADWAY SURFACE IS CONCRETE, AND THE MAIN STEEL ARCH HAS BLACKTOP SURFACING. THE LIGHTING SYSTEM COMPRISES CONTINUOUS 8-FT LONG LUMINAIRES UTILISING 42-INCH SLIM-LINE LAMPS AT A HEIGHT OF 45 INCHES ABOVE THE ROAD SURFACE, SO WIRED THAT IN THE EVENT OF A CIRCUIT BEING SEVERED, ONLY EVERY THIRD UNIT, UP TO A MAXIMUM OF 240 FEET OF LIGHTING, WILL BE DISRUPTED. THE SYSTEM PROVIDES A SUSTAINED LIGHT LEVEL OF NOT LESS THAN 2.5 FOOTCANDLES ON A VERTICAL TARGET MOUNTED ONE FOOT ABOVE THE ROADWAY AT THE CENTRE LINE. AVERAGE HORIZONTAL ILLUMINATION AT AN AMBIENT TEMPERATURE OF 50 DEGREES F IS NOT LESS THAN 1.90 FOOTCANDLES, MAINTAINED WITH THE LATERAL RATIO BETWEEN AVERAGE AND MINIMUM LEVELS OF NOT MORE THAN FOUR TO ONE. THE LONGITUDINAL DISTRIBUTION IS CONTINUOUSLY UNIFORM. /RRL/
