The effects of ship size and increased cargo specialization have led to an increase in the ancillary services a ship designer must provide. The wide variety of ancillary services called for by cargo specialization, safety, amenities, and automation and remote control are explained. Methods of applying value analysis to ancillary services are described and future prospects are discussed.
