SNOW REMOVAL AND ICE CONTROL TECHNIQUES AT INTERCHANGES

THE STUDY IDENTIFIES THE FACTORS, PROBLEMS AND TECHNIQUES INFLUENCING THE EFFICIENCY OF SNOW REMOVAL AND ICE CONTROL IN INTERCHANGE AREAS. INVESTIGATION TECHNIQUES INCLUDED A LITERATURE SEARCH, INTERVIEWS, AND FIELD OBSERVATIONS. THE PHYSICAL FACTORS STUDIED INCLUDED GEOMETRICS, STRUCTURES, APPURTENANCES, VEGETATION, CROSSOVERS, DRAINAGE, EQUIPMENT AND MATERIAL STORAGE, AND NON-CHEMICAL MELTING AND PHYSICAL DEVICES. OPERATIONAL FACTORS WERE INVESTIGATED. THE STUDY HAS INDICATED THAT FEW FACTORS AFFECTING SNOW REMOVAL ARE UNIQUE TO INTERCHANGES ALONE. DESIGN FACTORS SUCH AS LOCATION AND TYPE OF APPURTENANCES, SLOPES WHICH REDUCE DRIFTING, SNOW MELT DRAINAGE FACILITIES, AND SNOW STORAGE AREAS MUST BE GIVEN CONSIDERATION DURING INTERCHANGE DESIGN. OPERATIONAL PLANS MUST ACCOMMODATE PLOWING PROCEDURES, WHICH WILL REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE FORMATION OF WINDROWS ACROSS RAMP OPENINGS, MINIMIZE SNOW DRIFT FORMATION, AND REDUCE SNOW MELT DRAINAGE ACROSS PAVEMENTS. A COMBINED EFFORT BY DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE DISCIPLINES CAN RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN EFFICIENCY, SAFETY AND ECONOMY DURING WINTER MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS. PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS TO SIMPLIFY SNOW REMOVAL OPERATIONS AND PROCEDURES FOR EVALUATING PHYSICAL DESIGN AND SNOW REMOVAL OPERATIONS AT INTERCHANGES ARE OFFERED.
