SALT - PHASE I IN A STUDY OF EFFECTIVE ICE CONTROL

A STUDY WAS MADE WITH LARGE AND FINE CRYSTALS OF ROCK SALT, SOLAR SALT, AND A ONE-TO-ONE MIXTURE OF THE TWO SALTS TO DETERMINE THE MOST EFFECTIVE MEANS OF MELTING ICE ON HIGHWAYS. FINE CRYSTALS OF SOLAR SALT HAD THE FASTEST MELTING EFFECT, BUT THE MIXTURE PRODUCED THE BEST RESULTS OVER A 6-HOUR PERIOD. OWING TO ITS LOWER COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, SOLAR SALT CAN BE EXPECTED TO BREAK UP FASTER THAN ROCK SALT UNDER TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND IS THUS MORE SUITED TO OPERATIONS REQUIRING FAST MELTING OVER A SHORT TIME PERIOD OR UNDER SEVERE TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS (10--15 DEG F).
