STORAGE RIGS FOR HOT MIX DOUBLE AS ON-SITE ASPHALT PLANTS

NIGHT MAINTENANCE ON CHICAGO EXPRESSWAY BEGINS WITH USE OF HOT MIX FROM INSULATED TRUCK, WHICH KEEPS ASPHALT HOT FOR LIMITED PERIODS. PORTABLE UNITS, AND AN INSULATED TRUCK MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR CREWS TO HANDLE UP TO 3 MILES OF MAINTENANCE WORK ON HEAVILY TRAVELED EXPRESSWAY AT NIGHT. THE ENTIRE JOB IS ON CPM SCHEDULE WORKED OUT WEEKS IN ADVANCE. THE ENTIRE FREEWAY OPERATION REQUIRED ABOUT THREE WEEKS OF PLANNING SO THAT ACTUAL WORK COULD BE COMPLETED IN A SHORT TIME, WITH EACH MAN AND RIG WORKING AT TOP EFFICIENCY. PAVING-BREAKER CREWS STARTED THE JOB, FOLLOWED BY SWEEPERS, ASPHALT TRAILERS, THEN 5-TON ROLLERS THAT FINISHED THE PATCHING. FIRST, ONE LANE WAS CLOSED, THEN ANOTHER, UNTIL PATCH WORK WAS COMPLETED ALONG THE ROUTE. CREWS ALSO MADE USE OF MUDJACKING TO RAISE SETTLING SLABS OF CONCRETE. A MIXTURE OF FIVE BAGS OF LIME TO ONE OF PORTLAND CEMENT PLUS WATER WAS USED IN THE MUDJACKING OPERATION. MUD JACKING WAS USED FOR ASPHALT ALSO.
