BRIDGE REHABILITATION AND STRENGTHENING BY CONTINUOUS POST-TENSIONING

THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE DESIGN APPROACH AND THE CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES FOR STRENGTHENING AN OLD CONCRETE BRIDGE CROSSING THE WELLAND CANAL IN CANADA. THE SIX SIMPLY-SUPPORTED SPANS WERE MADE CONTINUOUS BY MEANS OF EXTERNAL POST-TENSIONING. THE BASIC IDEA BEHIND THE DESIGN, AND THE DEVISED METHODS OF EXECUTION IN THIS PROJECT, ARE PRACTICAL AND ECONOMICAL. THEY CAN BE USED SUCCESSFULLY FOR THE RESTORATION OF OLD CONCRETE BRIDGES SHOWING SIGNS OF OVERSTRESSING AND DETERIORATION. THIS SCHEME WAS ESPECIALLY ATTRACTIVE IN THAT ALL OF THE EXPANSION JOINTS, EXCEPT ONE, WERE ELIMINATED. THIS REDUCES MAINTENANCE COSTS WHILE MINIMIZING INCONVENIENCES. /AUTHOR/
