WEAR ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF PAVEMENTS DUE TO STUDDED TIRES AND CHAINS /IN NORWEGIAN/

PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS ON PAVEMENT WEAR DUE TO STUDDED TIRES AND CHAINS ARE BRIEFLY REVIEWED. INDICATIONS ARE ALSO GIVEN AS TO WHAT EXTENT STEEL STUDS AND CHAINS ARE BEING USED IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF SCANDINAVIA. TESTS CARRIED OUT TO INVESTIGATE THE RATE OF WEAR ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF PAVEMENTS UNDER VARYING CONDITIONS ARE DESCRIBED. THE TESTS HAVE PARTLY BEEN CONDUCTED AS FULL SCALE EXPERIMENTS ON EXISTING ROADS, PARTLY AS LABORATORY TESTS ON A ROTATING TEST-TRACK WHERE DRIVING SPEED, WHEEL LOAD, INFLATION PRESSURE, WHEEL POSITION AND TEMPERATURE CAN BE VARIED IN ORDER TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF EACH FACTOR SEPARATELY. A TOTAL OF 50 DIFFERENT PAVEMENT SAMPLES HAVE SO FAR BEEN TESTED ON THIS TRACK WHILE THE FULL-SCALE EXPERIMENTS INCLUDE 12 DIFFERENT PAVEMENT TYPES. IN ORDER TO COMPARE MEASURED WEAR AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS, THE AMOUNT OF WEAR IS RELATED TO A CERTAIN STANDARD TRAFFIC. THE EXPERIMENTS CARRIED OUT SO FAR INDICATE A RANGE OF PAVEMENT WEAR OF THE ORDER OF 4.5-11 MM PER YEAR FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS AND 3.5 - 5 MM FOR CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. FOR THE EXPERIMENTS WITH FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS, DIAGRAMS ARE SHOWN INDICATING THE VARIATION IN WEAR WITH VARYING PERCENTAGE OF AIR VOIDS, ASPHALT CONTENT, PENETRATION, AND AGGREGATE QUALITY. THE WEARING RESISTANCE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IS DISCUSSED, INDICATING POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS BY ALTERING THE DESIGN. EXPERIMENTS WITH PARTICULAR MIXES FOR THE REPAIR OF PAVEMENTS BY RECOATING ONLY THE WORN WHEEL TRACKS, ARE ALSO MENTIONED. FINALLY THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF PAVEMENT WEAR ARE ANALYZED, AND TABLES GIVING COST PER YEAR PER SQUARE METER ARE SHOWN. /SVV/RRL/
