THE INFLUENCE OF TOPOGRAPHY ON THE DURATION OF ICE-FORMING CONDITIONS ON A ROAD SURFACE

AN INVESTIGATION CARRIED OUT IN THE WINTER 1967-68 INTO THE INFLUENCE OF TOPOGRAPHY ON THE DURATION OF ICE-FORMING CONDITIONS ON A ROAD SURFACE IS DESCRIBED. STUDIES WERE MADE OF THE CLIMATIC AND ROAD-SURFACE CONDITIONS AT SIX SITES, TWO ON MOTORWAY M.8 AND FOUR ON TRUNK ROAD A.74. THE SITES WERE SELECTED TO GIVE A VARIETY OF TOPOGRAPHIC SITUATIONS, FOR EXAMPLE, WHERE THE ROAD WAS BUILT IN CUT, SHELTERED BY TREES OR ADJACENT TO A RIVER. EACH SITE WAS INSTRUMENTED TO RECORD WIND SPEED, ATMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY AND PRESSURE, AND ROAD-SURFACE WETNESS AND TEMPERATURE. THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE ROAD WAS SCREENED FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT WAS ALSO CALCULATED. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE TOPOGRAPHIC ENVIRONMENT MOST LIKELY TO FAVOR ICE-FORMING CONDITIONS IS ONE IN WHICH THE ROAD IS SCREENED FROM THE SUN; THE MORE EXTENSIVE THE SCREENING THE GREATER THE POTENTIAL DANGER. THE THEORETICAL RATE OF EVAPORATION OF WATER, DERIVED FROM MEASURED DATA FROM EACH OF THE SITES, VARIED INVERSELY WITH THE TOTAL DURATION OF ICE-FORMING CONDITIONS. /A/RRL/
