FAST-SET CONCRETE TESTED AT PORT HUENEME TRIALS

RAPID REPAIR OF ROCKET AND MORTAR SCARRED RUNWAYS HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MAJOR ENGINEERING PROBLEMS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. AS A RESULT, A FAST-FIX CONCRETE FORMULATION WAS DEVELOPED TO MEET SEABEE REQUIREMENTS IN MAKING THESE EMERGENCY REPAIRS. THREE TECHNIQUES WERE DEMONSTRATED. THE FIRST UTILIZED A CONVENTIONAL TRANSIT MIXER TRUCK WHICH HAD BEEN PRECHARGED WITH SAND AND CRUSHED ROCK AT THE BATCH PLANT. FAST FIX NO. 1 WAS ADDED BY OPENING BAGS OF THE MATERIAL INTO THE MIXER ON THE SITE. THE SECOND METHOD INVOLVED THE USE OF A CONVENTIONAL TRANSIT-MIXTURE AND GEN- WAY BAG. THESE ARE SPECIAL CONTAINERS THAT HAVE DOUBLE COMPARTMENTS AND ALLOW THE MATERIALS TO BE STORED FOR FUTURE USE. THESE BAGS ARE EMPTIED DIRECTLY INTO THE TRANSIT MIXER, MAKING ON THE SPOT MEASURING OF THE SAND, GRAVEL, WATER AND CONCRETE UNNECESSARY. A THIRD METHOD INVOLVES THE USE OF A SMITH-TURBINE TYPE MIXER WHICH ALSO USED THE PRE-CHARGED GEN-WAY BAGS. REGARDLESS OF THE METHOD USED, THE ENTIRE OPERATION, FROM BACKFILLING THE HOLE WITH SAND AND GRAVEL TO THE SETTING OF THE CONCRETE, CAN BE ACCOMPLISHDE IN ONE HOUR.
