FIVE YEAR TEST RESULTS: AISI RESEARCH PROJECT ON PAINTABILITY OF GALVANIZED STEEL

THE EXCELLENT PAINT-HOLDING ABILITY OF GALVANIZED SHEETS FOR ALMOST ALL OF 47 TRADE SALES PAINTS WEATHER EXPOSED FOR A TWO-YEAR PERIOD WAS DESCRIBED EARLIER IN A PAPER TITLED PAINTABILITY OF GALVANIZED STEEL, PUBLISHED IN 1963 AS PART OF THE AMERICAN IRON AND STEEL INSTITUTE'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE METALLURGY OF STEEL SERIES. APPROXIMATELY ONE-THIRD OF THE PAINTS TESTED WERE ZINC-DUST PAINTS (NOT ZINC-RICH), ONE-THIRD CEMENT-BASE PAINTS, AND THE REMAINDER PROPRIETARY PAINTS INCLUDING SOME LATEX-BASE PAINTS. THE GALVANIZED STEELS, BOTH TREATED AND UNTREATED, WERE SUPPLIED BY THREE DIFFERENT PRODUCERS. THE PAINTED TEST PANELS HAVE NOW BEEN ON WEATHER EXPOSURE FOR FIVE YEARS. A DETAILED INSPECTION OF THE PANELS WAS MADE RECENTLY BY THE THREE STEEL PRODUCERS, PAINT EXPERTS, AND OTHER INTERESTED OBSERVERS. THE DATA OBTAINED ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PAINTS ARE PRESENTED IN DETAIL. OF THE 47 PAINTS ORIGINALLY EXPOSED WITHOUT A TOP COAT, 43 ARE STILL IN GOOD CONDITION, INCLUDING 26 IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. AFTER EITHER ONE OR TWO YEARS EXPOSURE TO THE WEATHER, COMPLETE SETS OF THE PAINTED PANELS WERE TOP-COATED WITH WHITE HOUSE OR TRIM PAINTS. ON THESE REPAINTED PANELS, 46 OF THE ORIGINAL 47 PAINTS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION, INCLUDING 33 IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE EXPOSURE TEST WILL CONTINUE TO DETERMINE THE MAXIMUM LIFE OF THESE PAINTS ON GALVANIZED STEEL SHEETS. /AUTHOR/ PAINTABILITY OF GALVANIZED STEEL
