NEW INVESTIGATIONS INTO CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY

RECHERCHES NOUVELLES CONCERNANT LA TECHNOLOGIE DU BETON

THIS 2-PART STUDY DEALS WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF FRESH AND HARDENED CONCRETE. PART (1). GIVES RESULTS OBTAINED WITH A DEVICE WHICH AUTOMATICALLY PRODUCES CONSTANT-PLASTICITY CONCRETE (SERVO-WORKABILITY METER) AND RESULTS CONCERNING CONCRETE VIBRATION. A METHOD IS PROPOSED FOR CLASSIFYING VIBRATORS ACCORDING TO THEIR EFFICIENCY BY MEANS OF SONIC WAVE SPEED MEASUREMENTS. IN PART (2) THE FOLLOWING TOPICS ARE INVESTIGATED: TRIAXIAL STRESS AND POISSON'S EFFECT; RELAXATION OF CONCRETE KEPT AT A CONSTANT LENGTH; INFLUENCE OF THE ABSOLUTE DIMENSION OF THE MEMBERS ON THE SURFACE SHRINKAGE OF CONCRETE AND IN THE AXIS OF THE MEMBERS (THE DEVIATIONS OBSERVED ARE EXPLAINED BY THE EXISTENCE OF A WATER CONTENT GRADIENT); SPEED OF SOUND MEASUREMENTS ARE USED TO DEMONSTRATE THAT CONCRETE QUALITY IS LOWER AT THE SURFACE THAN INSIDE THE CONCRETE MEMBER. IN CONCLUSION, A STUDY IS PRESENTED OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE ABSOLUTE DIMENSION OF CONCRETE MEMBERS ON THEIR FLEXURAL STRENGTH.
