CORROSION CONTROL STUDIES FOR A RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM

PROTECTION OF THE SAN FRANCISCO RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM FROM CORROSION WAS STUDIED. PROBLEMS INCLUDED HIGH WATER TABLES, DISSOLVED SALTS, VARIED ACIDITY, HUMID, SALT-LADEN ATMOSPHERES, AND STRAY CURRENTS. SOILS WERE TESTED FOR CHEMICAL CONTENT, BACTERIAL ACTIVITY AND ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE. DESIGNS FOR THE PROPOSED STEEL, CAST IRON AND PRECAST CONCRETE SEGMENTS WERE EXAMINED FOR CORROSION CONTROL AND PROTECTIVE COATING POSSIBILITIES AND WERE EVALUATED FOR CATHODIC PROTECTION. HIGH ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY AND LONG TIME DURABILITY WERE SOUGHT FOR THE PROTECTIVE COATINGS. THE FAVORED COATING WAS A PRIMER FOLLOWED BY FIBERGLASS REINFORCED HOT COAL TAR ENAMEL.
