SKID-RESISTANCE--THE ROLE OF AGGREGATES AND OTHER FACTORS

THIS REVIEW ATTEMPTS TO SHOW THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SKID RESISTANCE, INDICATE MAJOR FACTORS AFFECTING THAT PROPERTY, MENTION THE MAJOR METHODS OF ITS EVALUATION AND, PRIMARILY, REVIEW THE ROLE OF AGGREGATES IN PROVIDING AND ASSURING RETENTION OF ADEQUATE SKID RESISTANCE. SAND AND GRAVEL, BECAUSE THEY ARE USUALLY COMPOSED OF WEAR-RESISTANT PARTICLES, HAVE AN ADVANTAGE OVER OTHER AGGREGATE TYPES. THE PARTICLE HARDNESS AND THE USUAL PRESENCE OF SEVERAL DIFFERENT MINERALS PROVIDE, RESPECTIVELY, OVERALL RESISTANCE TO POLISHING UNDER TRAFFIC AND A TENDENCY FOR ANY WEAR THAT DOES OCCUR TO BE SUFFICIENTLY UNEVEN TO PRECLUDE FORMATION OF A SLICK SURFACE. TO ASSURE SAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS FOR THE REASONABLY PRUDENT DRIVER, HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS CAN BE EXPECTED INCREASINGLY TO IMPOSE REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS AIMED AT PROVIDING AND MAINTAINING SKID RESISTANT PAVEMENT SURFACES.
