CONTRIBUTION TO THE DETERMINATION OF PARTICLE SIZE IN A CRUSHED MATERIAL

THE CHARACTERISTICS AND CALIBRATION OF THE EQUIPMENT USED FOR THE GRADING ANALYSIS OF CRUSHED MATERIALS VARIES FROM ONE TYPE OF APPARATUS TO THE NEXT. ANALYSES OF THE SAME MATERIAL CARRIED OUT WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF EQUIPMENT CAN PRODUCE WIDELY DIVERGENT RESULTS. IT IS NECESSARY TO SELECT A REFERENCE METHOD TO WHICH RESULTS OBTAINED WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF EQUIPMENT CAN BE COMPARED. ABOVE 75 MICRONS, THE CLASSIFICATION METHOD UNIVERSALLY ADOPTED IS SIEVING. BELOW THIS, NUMEROUS METHODS ARE USED. THE EXPERIMENTAL STUDY DESCRIBED HERE LED TO THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS: (1) FOR THE PART OF THE CRUSHED MATERIAL ABOVE 200 MESH, GRADING ENVELOPES OBTAINED BY SIEVING AND MICROSCOPIC INVESTIGATION DO NOT COINCIDE BUT ARE PARALLEL, A CORRELATION COEFFICIENT IS NEEDED TO CONVERT THE RESULTS. (2) FOR THE PART OF THE MATERIAL INFERIOR TO 200 MESH, GRADING ENVELOPES OBTAINED BY MICROSCOPIC INVESTIGATION, ELUTRIATION, SEDIMENTATION, AND COULTER COUNTER MEASUREMENTS DO NOT COINCIDE AND ARE NOT PARALLEL. (3) IT IS NECESSARY TO DEFINE THE EQUIPMENT AND CALIBRATION USED TO OBTAIN GRADING ENVELOPES. (4) A STANDARD METHOD, SUCH AS MICROSCOPIC INVESTIGATION, MUST BE USED AS REFERENCE FOR GRADING ANALYSES OBTAINED BY STANDARD METHODS. /CRIC/FESR/LCPC/A/RRL/
