RATIONAL CONCRETE MIX DESIGN
THE PRACTICAL FINDINGS OF A PROGRAM OF RESEARCH WHICH WAS CARRIED OUT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM ARE DESCRIBED. THEY INCLUDE A RELATION INDICATING THE MOST SUCESSFUL COMBINATION OF THE COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATES. THIS RELATION, AND THE RELATIONS FOR CUBE CRUSHING STRENGTH AND WORKABILITY, INVOLVE BOTH THE RELATIVE PROPORTIONS AND THE CHARACTERISTICS OF EXPRESSIONS FROM THE CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH CONSTITUENT MATERIAL. TWO SEPARATE FUNCTIONS OF THE AGGREGATE GRADING ARE OBTAINED, BOTH OF WHICH ARE NECESSARY FOR THIS METHOD OF MIX DESIGN.
