APPLICATION OF STATISTICAL PRINCIPLES TO QUALITY CONTROL AND ACCEPTANCE OF AGGREGATES

STATISTICAL QUALITY CONTROL OF AGGREGATES IS NEEDED BECAUSE OF EVER-INCREASING QUANTITIES OF MATERIALS PRODUCED AND THE RESULTING DESIRE TO CONTROL MORE TONS PER TEST COMPLETED. ANOTHER NEED IS TO ARRIVE AT BETTER SUBSTANTIATED PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL BEING USED. SEVERAL TABLES ARE INCLUDED FOR THE PURPOSE OF ILLUSTRATING THE PURPOSE OF GRADATION CHARACTERISTICS FOR TYPICAL AGGREGATES. MEAN AND STANDARD DEVIATIONS HAVE BEEN COMPUTED FOR EACH SIEVE FRACTION OF EACH AGGREGATE FOR EACH PRODUCER. THE APPLICATION OF STATISTICS TO THESE EXAMPLES INDICATES THAT THE OFF-TEST REPORTS DO NOT REPRESENT THE MATERIALS. A QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE TO BE TRULY EFFECTIVE, SHOULD REVEAL ANY PRODUCT DEFICIENCY IMMEDIATELY. THE COMPUTATION OF THE MEAN AND STANDARD DEVIATION AT FREQUENT INTERVALS WOULD APPEAR TO MEET THIS CRITERIA. THE SAMPLES MUST BE TAKEN IN A MANNER TO AVOID BIASING FOR ANY REASON AND TEST PROCEDURES MUST REMAIN CONSTANT AND NOT UNDULY INFLUENCE RESULTS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE MEAN AND STANDARD DEVIATIONS ARE RELIABLE INDICATIONS OF MATERIAL CHARACTER AND SHOULD BE USED MORE WISELY.
