A STUDY OF THE RELATION BETWEEN THE PARTICLE INDEX OF THE AGGREGATE AND THE PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS AGGREGATE MIXTURES

AN INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE RELATION BETWEEN THE PARTICLE INDEX OF AN AGGREGATE AND THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF A BITUMINOUS AGGREGATE MIXTURE. THE MARSHALL METHOD OF TEST WAS USED BECAUSE THIS IS THE METHOD EMPLOYED BY THE MICHIGAN STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT FOR DESIGNING BITUMINOUS AGGREGATE AND BITUMINOUS CONCRETE MIXTURES. AGGREGATE SOURCES USED WERE COARSE GRAVEL FROM THE SHORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR AND A NATURAL SAND USED FOR PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE. RESULTS OF THIS SERIES OF TESTS INDICATE THAT ALTHOUGH THERE IS A DEFINITE RELATION BETWEEN THE PARTICLE INDEX OF THE AGGREGATE AND THE PROPERTIES OF THE MIXTURES, THE INTERACTION OF ALL THE VARIOUS ELEMENTS ARE TOO INVOLVED TO PERMIT, AT THIS TIME, A SIMPLE STATEMENT CONCERNING THESE RELATIONS. THE INVESTIGATION CONSISTED OF THREE DEFINITE SERIES WHEREIN THE CRUSHED CONTENT OF THE AGGREGATE WAS VARIED IN DIFFERENT PROPORTIONS WHILE HOLDING THE TYPE OF ASPHALT, THE AGGREGATE GRADATION, AND MINERAL FILLER CONSTANT. THERE APPEARS TO BE A LINEAR RELATION BETWEEN THE PARTICLE INDEX OF THE AGGREGATE AND THE OTHER PROPERTIES OF THE MIXTURES SUCH AS OPTIMUM ASPHALT CONTENT, SPECIFIC GRAVITY, PERCENT AIR VOIDS, PERCENT VOIDS IN THE MINERAL AGGREGATE, AND THE PERCENT VOIDS FILLED WITH ASPHALT. THE COMPARISON OF THE FLOW WITH PARTICLE INDEX IS LESS DEFINITE THAN THE COMPARISONS OF OTHER FACTORS BECAUSE THERE WAS SUCH A VERY LITTLE CHANGE IN THE FLOW VALUES. THE COMPARISON OF THE PARTICLE INDEX WITH THE MARSHALL STABILITY OF THESE TWO SETS OF MIXTURES IS RATHER INDEFINITE EXCEPT THAT THERE IS A STRONG EVIDENCE THAT FIFTY PERCENT CRUSHED FINE AGGREGATE IS BETTER THAN EITHER ZERO OR ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CRUSHED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE PARTICLE INDEX MAY BE A VERY VALUABLE METHOD OF PREDICTION OF THE PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS AGGREGATE PAVING MIXTURE.
