A SINGLE-PARTICLE FREEZING RESISTANCE TEST FOR CONCRETE AGGREGATES

SINGLE PARTICLES OF THREE TYPES OF COARSE AGGREGATES, TWO CHERT GRAVELS, AND CRUSHED LIMESTONE WERE EMBEDDED IN CYLINDERS OF AIR-ENTRAINED MORTAR. THE SPECIMENS WERE SUBJECTED TO FREEZING (O F IN AIR) AND THAWING (40 F IN WATER) TESTS. CHANGES IN LENGTH AND WEIGHT WERE MEASURED. DIMENSIONS OF CYLINDERS CONTAINING NO AGGREGATE OR CRUSHED LIMESTONE DID NOT CHANGE. CYLINDERS CONTAINING CHERT GRAVEL EXPANDED TO VARYING DEGREES. THE EXPANSION OF CYLINDERS CONTAINING PARTICLES OF LOW SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF ONE TYPE OF GRAVEL WAS GREATEST. CYLINDERS CONTAINING SINGLE PARTICLES OF SEVERAL SPECIFIC GRAVITIES OF THIS LATTER CHERT GRAVEL WERE GIVEN 1 TO 4 DAYS DRYING TIME DURING CURING. GENERAL TRENDS OF INCREASING DURABILITY WITH DRYING TIME AND AGGREGATE SPECIFIC GRAVITY WERE OBSERVED. THE SPECIMENS ARE CONSIDERED TO SIMULATE WELL THE ENVIRONMENT OF AGGREGATE PARTICLES IN CONCRETE. /AUTHOR/
