CRUSHING OF ROCK AND ORE WITH HIGH FREQUENCY CURRENTS
AN INTERSTING AND PROMISING METHOD OF CRUSHING STONE WAS DEVELOPED USING HIGH FREQUENCY AC. THE METHOD DESCRIBED USES CONTACT RODS ATTACHED WITH A CABLE TO A HIGH FREQUENCY GENERATOR. THE CONTACT RODS ARE CONNECTED TO OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE ROCK. A HIGH FREQUENCY ELECTRIC FIELD BUILDS UP IN THE ROCK BETWEEN THE ELECTRODES. THROUGH POLARIZATION, AN ELECTRIC FLUX FORMS IN THE DIELECTRIC (ROCK) AND THE DIELECTRIC AND CONDUCTIVITY LOSSES HEAT THE MATERIAL. THESE HEAT WEDGES CAUSE THE SPLITTING OF THE BLOCK WHICH TAKES PLACE WITHOUT CHIP OR DUST FORMING. SPLITTING TAKES PLACE IN MUCH SHORTER TIME AND AT LOWER TEMPERATURES THAN IN THE CONVENTIONAL HEATING METHOD. THE INVESTIGATIONS AND TRIALS SHOW THAT IT WILL SOON BE POSSIBLE TO REPLACE MANUAL DRILLING AND REPEATED CRUSHING WITH THE NEW HIGH FREQUENCY METHOD.
