POLISHING OF STONES BY TRAFFIC IN THE WEARING SURFACE OF ROADS
AN OUTLINE IS GIVEN OF THE TEST PROCEDURES DEVELOPED AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY FOR DETERMINING THE RATE OF POLISHING OF THE AGGREGATES USED IN BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACES . SAND AND EMERY FLOUR ARE USED AS POLISHING AGENTS IN A SIX -HOUR TEST USING A ROTARY PNEUMATIC TYRED WHEEL. THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF THE TEST STONES IS RECORDED PERIODICALLY UNTIL THE ULTIMATE STATE OF POLISH IS ATTAINED. THERE IS GOOD CORRELATION BETWEEN THE SKIDDING RESISTANCE RECORDED AT TEST SITES ON PUBLIC ROADS, AND POLISHED STONE COEFFICIENT VALUES FROM LABORATORY TESTS.
