THE PROBLEM IS TREATED MATHEMATICALLY, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS SHOWING MOVEMENT OF MATERIALS IN MODEL EXPERIMENTS. A SECOND ARTICLE WILL DEAL WITH COARSE MATERIAL SUCH AS ORE AND COAL AND THE AUTHOR ALSO PROPOSES TO DEAL IN DETAIL WITH BUNKER BAFFLES AT SOME LATER DATE. /RRL/
