LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE FROM FLY ASH

CONSOLIDATED EDISON, A NEW YORK, N. Y., PUBLIC UTILITY, IS PRODUCING LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE FOR CONCRETE FROM SINTERED FLY ASH IN A NEW PLANT /THE FIRST IN THE U.S./ CAPABLE OF PRODUCING 1,000 TONS OF USABLE MATERIAL PER DAY. TESTS ON CONCRETE MADE WITH FLY-ASH AGGREGATE, NATURAL SAND AND 6 BAGS OF CEMENT PER CU YD, WILL PRODUCE CONCRETE WEIGHING 110 PCF, WITH A WATER-CEMENT RATIO OF 7.87, A SLUMP OF 3 IN., AND A 28-DAY COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 4,000 PSI. THE SINTERED ASH HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE N. Y. BOARD OF STANDARDS AND APPEALS FOR USE IN STRUCTURAL-GRADE CONCRETE.
