RESULTS OF THE 1970 QUESTIONNAIRE ON HIGHWAY APPLICATIONS OF NUCLEAR TECHNIQUES

THE 50 STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS OF THE UNITED STATES WERE CONTACTED CONCERNING THE POSSESSION AND USAGE OF NUCLEAR SURFACE TESTING EQUIPMENT, THE PURPOSE BEING TO DETERMINE THE CURRENT STATUS OF NUCLEAR TESTING. ONE HUNDRED PERCENT OF THE STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS ARE NOW OR HAVE BEEN ENGAGED IN NUCLEAR TESTING EITHER ON A RESEARCH OR A FILED CONTROL BASIS, OR BOTH. THE STATES REPORTED POSSESSION OF A TOTAL OF 881 SURFACE MOISTURE-DENSITY TESTING SYSTEMS. (THE WORD "SYSTEMS" IN THIS CASE MEANS A COMBINATION OF A SCALER AND PROBES FOR A PARTICULAR TESTING PURPOSE.) THE CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF HIGHWAY LEADS IN THE NUMBER OF SURFACE GAUGES USED FOR MOISTURE-DENSITY TESTING ON SOILS AND AGGREGATES, WITH 137. PENNSYLVANIA IS SECOND WITH 125, AND VIRGINIA IS THIRD WITH 102. THIRTY-SIX STATES ARE OPERATING 327 NUCLEAR UNITS FOR TESTING THE DENSITY OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS. ELEVEN STATES REPORTED POSSESSION OF A TOTAL OF FIFTEEN NUCLEAR ASPHALT CONTENT DEVICES. THIRTY-ONE STATES REPORTED USING A TOTAL OF 736 NUCLEAR SYSTEMS FOR SPECIFICATION CONTROL OF MOISTURE AND DENSITY OF SOILS AND AGGREGATES. FOURTEEN STATES ARE USING A TOTAL OF 239 NUCLEAR ASPHALT DENSITY SYSTEMS FOR SPECIFICATION CONTROL ON ASPHALT PAVEMENTS. THE HRB NUCLEAR QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, 1962-1964-1967-1970, ARE COMPARED.
