WELDED HIGHWAY BRIDGES: AN ANALYSIS OF INSPECTION FACTORS

A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF INSPECTION FACTORS FOR INTELLIGENT FIELD AND SHOP WELDING INSPECTION OF WELDED HIGHWAY BRIDGES. THE STUDY ANALYZES VARIOUS MEANS OF INSPECTION WHEN PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED, HOW TO MAKE SIMPLE WELDING TESTS IN THE FIELD WHEN NEEDED, HOW TO INTERPRET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS WITH RESPECT TO PREHEATING, HOW TO EVALUATE THE GENERAL QUALITY OF WELDING FROM VISUAL INSPECTION, HOW TO PREVENT OR CORRECT FAULTY WELDS, HOW TO ENSURE THE PROPER FITTING OF JOINTS, AND TO APPRAISE DEFECTS OR IMPERFECTIONS THAT MAY NOT IMPAIR THE STRENGTH OF THE STRUCTURE. THE DUTIES OF THE WELDING INSPECTOR ARE REVIEWED, AND DISCUSSIONS PRESENTED ON VERIFICATION OF PROCEDURES AND QUALIFICATIONS OF WELDERS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS. THE INSPECTOR OF WELDED CONSTRUCTION MUST DETERMINE THAT THE WELDING ROOCEDURES BEING USED CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE SPECIFICATIONS AND ARE SUITABLE FOR CONDITIONS THAT EXIST DURING THE WELDING. THE FACTORS REQUIRING ATTENTION ARE CONSIDERED UNDER THE FOLLOWING HEADINGS: (1) TEMPERATURE AND ATMOSPHERIC EFFECTS, (2) BASE METAL, (3) ELECTRODES FOR MANUAL WELDING, (4) ELECTRODES AND FLUXES FOR AUTOMATIC WELDING, (5) CHOICE OF ELECTRODE CLASSIFICATION, (6) WELDING PROCEDURES AND THEIR QUALIFICATIONS, AND (7) ALTERATION OF PROCEDURES BY QUALIFICATION TESTS. THE CAUSE, SIGNIFICANCE, PREVENTION, AND CORRECTION OF WELD DEFECTS ARE OUTLINED. THE RUDIMENTS OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING APPLICABLE TO HIGHWAY BRIDGES ARE PRESENTED: RADIOGRAPHIC, ULTRASONIC, MAGNETIC PARTICLE, AND DYE PENETRANT.
