CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT OF CONSISTENCY OF FERROSILICON/MAGNETITE SUSPENSION IN A DRUM TYPE HEAVY MEDIA PLANT
TO CONTROL THE PERFORMANCE OF THE HEAVY MEDIA PLANT AND OPERATE IT AT OPTIMUM EFFICIENCY, MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL OF MEDIA CONSISTENCY ARE ESSENTIAL. A CONSISTOMETER WHICH AUTOMATICALLY MEASURES THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF SUSPENSIONS MADE UP OF FERROSILICON/MAGNETITE/CLAY/WATER WAS SUCCESSFULLY DEVELOPED AND TESTED IN AN OPERATION PLANT WITH A 250 TON/HOUR WEMCO MOBIL MILL HEAVY MEDIA DRUM. WITH THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF THE SUSPENSION KEPT AT THE DESIRED LEVEL, THE GRAVITY DIFFERENTIAL WHICH VARIES ACCORDING TO THE AMOUNTS OF CLAY CONTAMINANT ACQUIRED FROM THE FEED WAS DETERMINED BY THE MEASUREMENTS OF CONSISTENCY, AND CONTROLLED BY SIMPLY VARYING THE AMOUNT OF WATER ADDED TO THE FEED GRAVEL PASSING THROUGH THE SCRUBBER AND DEWATERING SCREENS. FOR EVALUATING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PLANT, SPHERES (1/2 AND 3/4 INCH DIAMETER) OF RESIN-BONDED MAGNETITE MADE UP TO DIFFERENT SPECIFIC GRAVITIES WERE FED TO THE SEPARATOR AND THE FRACTIONS RECOVERED WITH HAND MAGNETS AT THE FLOAT AND SINK RINSING SCREENS WERE ANALYZED ON THE PARTITION CURVES WHICH CHARACTERIZE SEPARATION RESULTS. THE TESTS SHOWED CONCLUSIVELY THAT SUSPENSION CONSISTENCY SHOULD BE KNOWN FOR ACCURATE AND EFFICIENT PLANT PERFORMANCE. /AUTHOR/
