INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECT OF VARIATION IN TAR CONTENT ON THE PROPERTIES OF TAR/EPOXY COATINGS.

GENERAL TRENDS IN THE PERFORMANCE OF TAR-EPOXY PAINTS HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED IN SEVERAL SERIES OF FORMULATIONS CONTAINING 45-70% OF A COAL TAR PITCH IN THE BINDER. SYSTEMS BASED ON LIQUID AND SOLID EPOXY RESINS CURED WITH AMINE ADDUCT AND POLYAMIDE CURING AGENTS WERE EVALUATED. THE EFFECTS OF THESE VARIABLES ON POT LIFE, PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF NEW AND OLD FILMS, AND CHEMICAL RESISTANCE ARE DESCRIBED, AND THE EFFECT OF EXTERIOR WEATHERING ON OVERCOATING PROPERTIES IS SHOWN. RESULTS INDICATE A SIGNIFICANT LOSS IN SOME DESIRABLE PROPERTIES WHEN THE TAR CONTENT EXCEEDS 60%. /AUTHOR/
