THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE CORROSION OF STEEL BRIDGES ARE DISCUSSED AND THE USE OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR SUCH BRIDGES IS DESCRIBED. HOT DIP GALVANIZING, SPRAYING WITH ZINC OR ZINC-ALUMINUM ALLOY AND PLATING WITH CADMIUM (IN THE CASE OF HIGH TENSILE BOLTS) ARE CONSIDERED TOGETHER WITH ZINC RICH PAINTS AND PAINTS PIGMENTED WITH RED LEAD OR CALCIUM PLUMBATE.
