PHOTOELASTIC LOAD CELLS FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURES

THE DESIGN OF RELIABLE AND ACCURATE GAGES FOR MEASURING LOADS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURES PRESENTS SPECIAL PROBLEMS DUE TO THE NEED FOR LONG-TERM MEASUREMENTS IN WHAT ARE USUALLY ARDUOUS SITE CONDITIONS. A RANGE OF LOAD CELLS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN WHICH THE LOAD READ-OUT IS MEASURED IN MEASURED IN TERMS OF THE BIREFRINGENCE PRODUCED IN A GLASS DISC BUILT INTO THE CELL. TWO SYSTEMS ARE POSSIBLE; THE DIRECT APPLICATION OF LOAD TO THE DISC OR, WHERE THE LOADS NORMALLY EXCEED THE STRENGTH OF THE DISC, APPLICATION OF THE LOAD TO AN ELASTIC BODY WHOSE DEFORMATION TRANSFERS ONLY PART OF THE APPLIED LOAD ON TO THE DISC INSERTED INTO THE BODY. IN BOTH CASES THE FRINGE ORDER AT THE DISC CENTER IS RELATED BY CALIBRATION OR CALCULATION TO THE APPLIED LOAD. AN ELASTIC BODY INCORPORATING A GLASS DISC TRANSDUCER HAS THEREFORE BEEN TERMED A 'PHOTOELASTIC LOAD CELL'. THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE TECHNIQUE ARE OUTLINED AND EXAMPLES GIVEN OF THREE DISTINCT DESIGNS FOR LOAD CELLS SUBSEQUENTLY INSTALLED IN SCAFFOLDING FRAMES, TUNNEL LININGS AND ON STEEL CABLES. /AUTHOR/
