COATINGS SYMPOSIUM -- NEED FOR IMPROVED ECONOMICS OF NEW CONSTRUCTION PAINTING

ECONOMIC FACTORS TO OFFSET RISING CONSTRUCTION COSTS ARE DISCUSSED. WORKER PRODUCTIVITY SHOULD BE IMPROVED, AND WAGE INCREASES MUST COINCIDE WITH PRODUCTIVITY GAINS SO THAT INVESTMENT COSTS CAN BE LOWERED. LONG TERM FACTORS THAT AFFECT PRODUCTIVITY ARE DISCUSSED. IT IS FELT THAT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE COATING SUPPLIER DOES NOT END WITH THE PRODUCTION OF SATISFACTORY COATING MATERIALS. HE MUST ALSO PROVIDE PRODUCT INFORMATION ON SUPERVISION OF SURFACE PREPARATION AND COATING APPLICATION. METHODS EMPLOYED TO AID THE USER IN SELECTION OF THE BEST COATING AND THE USE OF SUCH COATINGS ARE DESCRIBED. THE FOLLOWING FACTORS IN REDUCING COSTS OF NEW CONSTRUCTION PAINTING ARE DISCUSSED: (1) SPECIFICATION WRITING FOR THE PAINTING CONTRACTOR, (2) THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE FIELD PAINTING CONTRACTOR IN REPORTING IMPROPER SHOP PAINTING, (3) THE EFFECT OF INSUFFICIENT SCHEDULING FOR PAINTING, AND (4) THE IMPACT OF LABOR, EQUIPMENT, AND SUPERVISION OF COSTS. THE FABRICATOR'S ROLE IN PROVIDING INDUSTRY WITH ECONOMICAL HIGH-QUALITY NEW CONSTRUCTION PAINTING IS PRESENTED. THE FABRICATOR'S RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDES: (1) PROPER PAINTING SPECIFICATIONS, (2) GOOD CONSTRUCTION DETAILS, AND (3) ACCOMPLISHMENT OF SPECIFIED WORK. SURFACE PREPARATION, PAINTING METHODS, SURFACE PREPARATION ECONOMY, AND ADVANTAGES OF SHOP PRIMING ARE DISCUSSED.
