PREDICTING SERVICE LIFE OF ORGANIC COATING: A STATE OF THE ART REVIEW

A SURVEY OF THE RECENT TECHNICAL LITERATURE AND REPLIES TO A QUESTIONNAIRE SUBMITTED TO A NUMBER OF PAINT MANUFACTURERS WERE USED TO OUTLINE THE PRESENT STATE OF THE ART OF RAPIDLY PREDICTING THE SERVICE LIFE OF ORGANIC COATING FILMS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT PRESENT METHODS ARE LARGELY UNRELIABLE DUE TO DISPROPORTIONAL ACCELERATION OF SOME MODES OF FAILURE WITH RESPECT TO OTHERS. THIS RESULTS IN UPSETTING THE INTERACTION OF FAILURE MODES AND DISTORTION OF SYNERGISTIC RELATIONSHIPS IN PAINT FILM FAILURE. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT TRULY RELAIBLE RAPID TEST METHODS WILL BE DEVELOPED ONLY WHEN EACH DETERIORATIVE FACTOR IS ACCELERATED A PROPORTIONATE AMOUNT TO RESULT IN THE SAME BALANCE OF ALL FUTURE MODES AS IS PRESENT IN NORMAL OUTDOOR EXPOSURES. /AUTHOR/
