DETERMINATION OF TOTAL STRESSES IN SOIL - PRINCIPLE OF MEASUREMENT
DETERMINATION DES CONTRAINTES TOTALES DANS LES SOLS - PRINCIPE DE MESURE.
SOME COMMENTS ARE MADE ON THE POSSIBILITY OF MEASURING TOTAL STRESSES IN A SOIL MASS AND ON THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROBLEM. POSSIBLE SIMPLIFICATIONS ARE MENTIONED TOGETHER WITH DEVICES ADAPTED TO SOIL MECHANICS PROBLEMS. THE FOLLOWING CASES ARE CONSIDERED: (1)- DETERMINATION OF A STRESS F ON ONE PLANE; 1A- IF THE PLANE PERPENDICULAR TO THE FORMER AND WHICH CONTAINS STRESS F IS KNOWN; 1B- MEASUREMENT OF THE (MAIN) STRESS IN RELATION TO THE MAIN KNOWN PLANE; (2) DETERMINATION OF ALL STRESSES AT ONE POINT; 2A- THE POINT CONSIDERED IS A PLANE SYMMETRICAL TO THAT OF THE STRESSES; 2B- THE PROBLEM IS A PROBLEM OF PLANE DEFORMATION. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN IN WHICH STRESSES BEHIND A RETAINING WALL ARE MEASURED.
