DETERMINATION OF THE SIZE OF DEFECTS IN WELDS BY THE ULTRASONIC REFLECTION METHOD

THIS INVESTIGATION WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE POSSIBILITY AND ACCURACY OF MEASURING THE SIZE OF DEFECTS IN WELDS BY ULTRASONIC TESTING. THE INFLUENCES OF THE PROBE-TO-SPECIMEN CONTACT, THE PROPERTIES OF THE PROBES, THE SELECTION OF THE BEST ANGLE OF INCIDENCE, THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE ULTRASONIC DETECTOR AT BORE-HOLES AND GROOVES, AND THE REFLECTION CONDITIONS OF ARTIFICIAL AND NATURAL DEFECTS WERE STUDIED THOROUGHLY. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE TESTS TO MEASURE AS ACCURATELY AS POSSIBLE THE SIZE OF THE DEFECTS. THE SIZE OF THE DEFECTS MAY BE DETERMINED WITH AN ACCURACY OF ABOUT PLUS OR MINUS 50%. /AUTHOR/
