THE RESISTANCT OF REINFORCEMENT TO CORROSION
ALTHOUGH CEMENT IS IN ITSELF AN EXCELLENT PROTECTIVE COATING FOR STEEL, CAREFUL ATTENTION IS NECESSARY DURING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TO PREVENT THE CORROSION OF NORMAL STEEL REINFORCEMENT IN CONCRETE WORK. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE CAUSES AND MECHANISM OF THE CORROSION OF REINFORCEMENT AND THE MEANS BY WHICH IT MAY BE MINIMIZED OR PREVENTED. INFORMATION IS ALSO GIVEN ON THE PROTECTIVE COATING OF STEEL. (E.G. GALVANIZING AND CADMIUM-PLATING) AND THE USE OF CORROSION-RESISTANT REINFORCEMENT SUCH AS STAINLESS STEEL, AND THE RELATIVE ECONOMICS OF USING SUCH MATERIALS ARE DISCUSSED. /RRL (A)/
