A RESEARCH APPARATUS FOR SUBJECTING PAVEMENT MATERIALS TO REPEATED TRIAXIAL LOADING

SPECIAL TESTING EQUIPMENT IS DESCRIBED THAT WAS DEVELOPED A S THE PRELUDE TO AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE RESPONSE OF PAVEMENT MATERIALS TO REPEATED LOADING. THE EQUIPMENT IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER SO FAR DESCRIBED AND EMBODIES SEVERAL UNIQUE AND UNUSUAL CHARACTERISTICS. A SPECIAL FEATURE OF THE APPARATUS IS A HYDRO-MECHANICAL DEIVCE WHICH SUCCESSFULLY SOLVES THE HITHERTO NEGLECTED PROBLEM OF DEVELOPING STRESS PATHS SIMILAR TO THOSE OBSERVED IN ACTUAL PAVEMENTS. THE EQUIPMENT INCORPORATES AN ELABORATELY INSTRUMENTED TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED TRIAXIAL CELL AND A FULLY AUTOMATIC DATA MONITORING AND ACQUISTION SYSTEM. /RRL(A)/
