ABRASION OF ELASTOMETERS UNDER LABORATORY AND SERVICE CONDITIONS

LAWS RELATING THE RATE OF ABRASION TO STRESS, TEMPERATURE MODULUS, AND CARBON CONTENT OF ELASTOMERS DIFFER ACCORDING TO THE TEXTURE OF THE ABRADANT SURFACE. THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE VARIATIONS IN ABRASION ON ROUGH TEXTURED AND SMOOTH TEXTURED SURFACES. THE RELATION BETWEEN ABRASION AND STRESS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE APPLICABLE TO RIGID POLYMERS AND RUBBER-LIKE ELASTOMERS. THE ABRASION OF TIRES IS DISCUSSED AND IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE RELATION OF TIRE WEAR TO THE APPLIED STRESS IS CONSISTENT WITH ABRASION BEING A MIXED CUTTING AND FRICTIONAL ABRASION PROCESS. /RRL/
