THE USE OF EPOXY RESINS FOR ANTI-SKID SURFACES (IN FRENCH)

AFTER A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE POSSIBLE USES OF PLASTICS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING, THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES AN EXPERIMENTAL TRIAL OF AN ANTI-SKID SURFACE MADE FROM EPOXY RESIN CARRIED OUT BY THE LYONS REGIONAL LABORATORY. AFTER A PRELIMINARY STUDY INVOLVING THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF RESINS AND HARDENERS, FORMULATION TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT. A TRIAL ON ABOUT 100 SQUARE METERS WAS THEN MADE, ON A MAIN ROAD IN THE LYONS AREA CARRYING HEAVY TRAFFIC, IN A ZONE OF ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION. TWO AGGREGATES REPUTED TO BE OF HIGH QUALITY WERE ADOPTED FOR THIS TRIAL: GRANUSIL AND LUMISILICE. PERIODICAL TESTS AND OBSERVATIONS REVEALED THAT AN EPOXY RESIN ON A BITUMINOUS ROAD SURFACE WAS A POSSIBILITY, AND AN APPROPRIATE RESIN HARDENING SYSTEM WAS ADOPTED. THE AGGREGATE HAS TO BE JUDICIOUSLY CHOSEN, MOREOVER; ALTHOUGH THE RUGOSITY WAS EXCELLENT INITIALLY, THE AGGREGATES SELECTED IN THIS CASE CANNOT BE SAID TO HAVE COME UP TO EXPECTATIONS. CONSIDERABLE WEAR WAS OBSERVED AFTER A VERY SHORT TIME. AT THE PRESENT TIME, SUCH A SURFACE IS VERY EXPENSIVE AND APPEARS TO BE RESERVED FOR SPECIAL CASES. /LCPC/A/RRL/
